9 am Worship Service. Coffee Hour after Worship.

  • Blue Christmas 12/17 6pm

This is not only a service for folks who have experienced the death of a loved one in the past year. It is a service for anyone who knows that commercial Christmas culture is rampant, and Advent is a time of prayerful preparation for the incarnation. It is a service that acknowledges that sometimes we are not in the happiest or most peaceful moods even when surrounded by lights and songs about Christmas. It is a service that allows you to pause and breathe deeply even if there is a lot going on. It is a service that lets you be present and mindful of pain and loss that brings, or reminds you of, heartbreak for any reason. Some of you may wish for a time to find a quiet moment and remember what the Christmas season is truly about. There will be quiet music, prayer time and comforting words from scripture. Although there is sadness and grief, there is always hope and healing that can be experienced as we are surrounded by the compassionate love of God. Come let us share in the truth of Immanuel - God with Us.

  • Christmas Luminaries

Over 40 years ago, the Alplaus United Methodist Church introduced the hamlet of Alplaus to Christmas luminaries, which are small white bags with a burning candle inside that are placed outside along your property on Christmas Eve. They are an adaptation from the small bonfires that were built in front of each home in Mexico to welcome the Christ Child on Christmas Eve. People in New Mexico carried on this tradition for many years. However, one year in the early 20th century, one family had been unable to adequately prepare the traditional home bonfire because of illness in their family. As the holiday season drew near, the youngest child placed a broken candle in a paper bag partially filled with sand and placed it outside their home to keep the tradition and welcoming spirit alive. These “little lights” or “farolitos” have become a popular way to keep this welcome tradition alive. They are supposed to be placed along your property edge along the road and up your driveway or walkway. It is a beautiful sight to see streets lined with these lights. The more families that put out the luminaries, the more impressive the sight is. Luminaries will be available for purchase again this year for $5 per dozen; this includes the bags and candles. There will be some at the church starting Dec. 7, or you can contact Barb or Dan Trask at 518-399-6454 to place an order.
